Leading Up to Construction
One Journal Square was first acquired by Kushner Companies in 2014. An updated description on their website details that construction will bring a multitude of landscape: “In the heart of Jersey City’s burgeoning Journal Square neighborhood, our 2 million square foot, $800 million towers are in development. 1 Journal Square is envisioned to rise 66 stories with a podium of vibrant retail, amenities, and cultural uses. New transit connections, a curated sculpture garden, and a new sprawling public plaza at the base of the buildings will embed 1 Journal Square into the urban fabric of the neighborhood.”
The project, however, ran into legal issues between the developer, Kushner Company, and the city of Jersey City and the Mayor that took two years to settle before moving forward.

Fast forward to June 15th, Mayor Steven Fulop tweeted breaking news that construction will finally begin: “Tomorrow we break ground on 1JSQ – it’s been a long road but we are here w/largest single residential project in NJ (will be the largest building in this pic). We have multiple 60 story buildings + multiple 30 story buildings under construction here. Skyline is being transformed.”
The following day, the Mayor added news of a Target being part of the retail space: “As part of this site @Target will be opening in JSQ on the ground floor at 1JSQ. It’s going to be a terrific anchor + huge help for residents in the area on many fronts as we add retail options in walking distance. It’s been a complicated project for sure but we’re finally here.”
Images shared by Kushner Companies showed the groundbreaking ceremony taking place on June 16, 2022.
